Bees Needs Week
10-17 July 2024
Bees’ Needs Week is an annual event coordinated by Defra, working alongside charities, businesses, conservation groups, and academic institutions to raise awareness of bees and other pollinators.
Bees and other pollinators are an essential part of our environment and play a crucial role in food production - they contribute the equivalent of more than £500 million a year to UK agriculture and food production, by improving crop quality and quantity – and are also vital to our wider, natural ecosystems. Bees’ Needs Week is a great opportunity for you to find out more about how important pollinators are and how you can support them.
The public is being encouraged to do their bit at home to care for bees, with five simple actions to help provide bees and other pollinators with food and a home.
1. Grow more flowers, shrubs, and trees.
2. Let your garden grow wild.
3. Cut your grass less often.
4. Don’t disturb insect nests and hibernation spots.
5. Think carefully about whether to use pesticides, could you use companion planting instead to help?!
Cliffe Castle Museum & Park, Lindengate mental Health Charity, and Wirral Country park were three of the winners from 2020, to name a few.
If you are planning on getting involved, please get in touch at beesneeds@defra.gov.uk to let them know what you're doing!
