Mammals on Roads
Can you watch out for wildlife on the roads and help find out crucial information about the status of our nation's mammals?
Although a sad sight, recording roadkill each year tells Peoples Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) about how wild mammals are faring in the wider landscape. Since 2001, thousands of records of mammals, dead and alive, collected by hundreds of volunteers, have shown declines in wild populations: one key finding is that hedgehogs are rapidly disappearing.
Taking part really can make a huge difference to mammal conservation.
You and your family and friends can take part on any number of journeys through the summer – perfect for those holiday getaways! Car journeys of 20 miles or more are best, so there’s more chance of spotting something, but any journey – whether or not you see a mammal – is useful information.
You will just need to tell PTES about your route and what you see along the way, dead and alive, via their app. With clear audio descriptions of each mammal, colourful illustrations, and easy-to-use navigation, the Mammals on Roads app couldn’t be simpler to use. Set it running at the start of a journey and each sighting can be recorded with a few clicks.
The survey should of course only be done by passengers!
